The length of a towing line from the toggle to the eye which is used initially to start a horse boat out of a lock. When the toggle reaches the tubling the tack line falls slack and the towing line takes the full weight of the boat.

Thames barge
The barge type related to the Thames estuary and associated waterways. Defined by spritsail rig. The largest loaded around 300 tons but 175 was closer to the average. Size varied depending on the rivers off the main estuary, which they used. The rig of the Thames barges can usually be lowered to 'shoot' bridges across the navigation. Stumpies and Mules were specific variations of barge sailing gear.

trow
The wooden sailing vessel of the Rivers Severn and Wye, typically 60 to 70 feet long and 12 to 20 feet beam, with a shallow draught and a flat bottom. Originally a trow had a square rig with decks forward and aft only, and an open cargo space amidships. During the Nineteenth Century those trows trading below Gloucester tended to adopt a fore and aft rig and a more enclosed hold, but some remained open. Trows made use of the wind and tide where possible and in confined waters could be towed by gangs of men, and later horses.

tube boat
A boat modified by removal of its hold cross beams to provide a clear and unobstructed space to carry bundles of steel tubes. They were mostly owned by Stewarts and Lloyds and used at their works at Coombeswood on the Birmingham Canal Navigation. They were a variety of both wooden and metal boats, single and double ended boats, open Birmingham boats and former long distance boats.
