Chelmer barge
Barge type specific to the rivers
Chelmer and Blackwater and limited to 2ft draught. Boats were 60ft x16ft
carrying up to 27 tons. Both double ended and transom sterned types existed. The
hold extended from a stern deck right through to the stern port. Wooden horse
drawn craft replaced by powered steel craft in the 1950's.

Chesterfield Boats are
very high in the hold and built with a pair of large wooden breast pieces said
to stop them putting their nose under the waves on the River Trent on which they
traded. Chesterfield boats often carried simple sailing gear similar to that of
Upper Trent Keels. Cabins were built under a flush decked stern.
