randan
A development of the Thames wherry and
also gave its name to the system by which it was propelled. This combined
sculling and rowing in the same craft, for it had three hands and a cox. Stroke
and bow were oarsmen, while the second person sculled. This method of propulsion
was widely used from the mid-nineteenth century, for both speed and
convenience.
