A general term for cramps made in the
form of the letter G, used for all types of holding and assembling.

The typical Scottish sailing barge from
which most Scottish Canal craft were developed. A long narrow flat vessel or
lighter with a hatchway extending almost the full length of the decks, sometimes
fitted with masts that may be lowered to pass under bridges.' (Youngs Nautical
Dictionary 1863). Sloop rigged sailing craft, size 60ft x 13ft 6 inches,
designed for the river Clyde.

game block
A slotted block used to hold a plank
while boring it from edge to edge. It was often made from an old rudder stock,
the slot being cut by sawing into the hole for the tiller. The plank would be
held in by a wedge and the whole block could be chocked up at an angle to suit
the operator. the plank would be moved through the slot as the work
progressed.

gauging stick
A measuring device used to
calculate the tonnage that a boat was carrying. A graduated stick would be
placed over the side of the boat with a bracket resting on the gunwhale so that
the 'dry inches' above the waterline could be measured.

straight sheer or sides below the gunwales. At one time popular on inland
waterways and in harbours, especially on the Thames, although declining in

A length of chain fitted across
the width of the hold of a narrow boat,usually below the beams, and fitted with
a rigging screw to enable the chain to be tightened or slackened. The chains and
beams provide rigidity for the hold of the boat.

Built in 1932 for
the Grand Union Canal Company by Peter Brotherhood of Peterborough. 18ft x 7ft x
4ft 6in with a 10 ton capacity. Experimental and never used in service.

Grand Western and Chard Canal tub boat
Tubs
26ft x 6ft 6in carried 10 tons on a draught of 2ft 3in. There were pointed bows
on the first ones which carried 8 tons. In use on the Chard Canal until 1867.
The last pair of boats operated on the Grand Western Canal Barge Section until
1924.

gun punt
Used for wildfowling, a double-ended
flat bottomed dinghy evolved, normally clinker built of wood and mounting a
fixed gun. Aim was usually by pointing the gun punt by means of extra paddles
like table tennis bats.

Pronounced 'gunnel' the upper edge or
top side of a boat or ship above the waterline; so named as cannon on early
warships were fired above the 'whale' or upper line.
