Women's Garments

Main Garments

1.1 Covering body above and below the waist
Dress (Types 1-6)
1.11 Dress (1) one piece
1.12 Dress (2) two pieces
1.13 Dress (3) three or more pieces
1.14 Dress (4) as 1 to 3 with additional, optional piece, but complete without it (including dresses with alternative day/evening bodices)
1.15 Dress (5) one piece needing additional garment for completion
1.16 Dress (6) two pieces needing additional garment for completion
Note: The pieces referred to in this classification are the main parts of the whole, e.g. Bodice and Skirt in Dress (2); Gown, Petticoat, Stomacher (18th century) (3). A trousersuit will be Dress (2) if made up of Bodice, Pullover and Trousers; Dress (6) if made up of Bodice, waistcoat and Trousers. - Such accessories as belt, collar are not taken into account; a separate catalogue entry gives this information.

Note: 1.2 and 1.3 include separate garments and those which survive alone from a complete dress. 1.23 Jacket, Waistcoat covers all sleeveless forms. Pullover is used in preference to jumper or jersey, because it more exactly states the form, and is also the term used in Canada, France and Germany.
